Susan Silva

With a career spanning over two decades teaching art in public schools, Susan Silva has taught as far west as Nevada and most recently at Oakton High School in Vienna, VA where she was the Art Department Chair and taught photography classes. She is currently a Fine Arts Resource teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools where she thoroughly enjoys working with the art teachers in this culture rich district.

Mentoring and collaborating with teachers continuously reminds her of how important community is to education. In turn, she has savored her experiences beyond the classroom that have included serving as a curriculum fellow for Engaging the Arts and Museums in Mind and WISSIT for Project Zero, and working as a facilitator of Digital Storytelling at the National Gallery of Art. She has relished her learning experiences serving as the Secondary Division representative on the Professional Learning through Research Committee (PLR) with National Art Education Association (NAEA). In 2019, Silva was named Southeastern Region Art Educator by NAEA.

Silva teaches AVT 668 Three-Dimensional Art Making Across Cultures. Her own studio practice is varied, embracing mixed media—primarily photography, collage and ceramics. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from West Virginia University and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
