Gail Scott White is a new media scenographer and animator who collaboratively makes “Live Movies,” a hybrid art form that interactively synthesizes animation and cinematic art, and theatrical and musical elements with built environments and live performance. She has created new media scenography for dozens of productions including: White Witch at Symphony Space (NYC), B3W’s Confined, Dixon Place (NYC) and Irondale Center (Brooklyn NY); Ariel Dance Theatre’s Flush: The Gyre Project, Long Center for the Performing Arts (Austin TX); Maryland Opera Studio’s premiere of Shadowboxer (on the life of Joe Louis), Clarice Smith Center for the Performing Arts (College Park MD); The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein, Arena Stage (Washington DC); and Hamlet at Temple Theatre in Sanford NC, and Actors Guild of Lexington (KY). Additional new media scenography includes Cyburbia Productions’ Silence & Darkness, a live movie for the cell phone age and Time Traveler Zero Zero — A Story of John Titor; Komar & Melamid’s opera Naked Revolution (composed by Dave Soldier); Marisol by José Rivera; Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe; Mephisto by Klaus Mann/Ariane Mnouchkine; Moisés Kaufman and Tectonic Theater Project’s 33 Variations in Arena Stage’s workshop production at Georgetown University; and several productions for Encompass New Opera Theatre (NYC). Her installation work has been exhibited at the Alternative Museum and the A.I.R. Gallery in NYC. She is the co-editor of Live Movies: A Field Guide to New Media for the Performing Arts. Her work, in the “Live Movies” field has been published in American Theatre magazine (NYC), the international journal TheatreForum (published by UC-San Diego) and Live Design magazine (NYC). Live Movies is also cited in: Cyborg Theatre: Corporeal/Technological Intersections in Multimedia Performance by Jennifer Parker-Starbuck (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), and Entangled: Technology and the Transformation of Performance by Chris Salter, foreword by Peter Sellars (MIT Press, 2010). White’s work has been funded by an Artists Fellowship from the Virginia Commission on the Arts, Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology, and by a $125,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant for the “New Stage Technology Project.” Gail Scott White is a Professor of New Media Art at Mason’s School of Art, and she has also taught art at Colgate University and Cornell University.
